When is the rainy season in Da Nang and Hoi An?

Central Vietnam's wet season runs from about September to December, with October and November usually the wettest months. It's not constant rain, more often you'll get short, heavy downpours, sometimes a full grey day, then clear spells in between. Mornings are frequently drier than afternoons, so it pays to be an early-rising family. Temperatures stay warm (typically low-to-mid 20s°C), so it never feels cold, just wet.

What to expect with kids

The upside is real: far fewer crowds, lower prices on resorts and flights, and a softer, cooler light that's lovely for a slower family pace. The trade-offs are that beach days become opportunistic rather than guaranteed, and you'll want a flexible plan. With young children, the rainy season rewards families who keep expectations loose, chase the clear windows, and have indoor fall-backs ready.

Flooding: what parents should know

In the heaviest weeks (usually late October into November), Hoi An can flood near the Thu Bon river, the low-lying streets of the Ancient Town closest to the water are the ones affected. It's usually short-lived and well-managed, but with a stroller and small children it's worth checking conditions before you travel and choosing accommodation on higher ground or slightly away from the riverfront. Da Nang itself, being larger and less low-lying, is generally less affected. If you're visiting in peak wet weeks, build in flexibility and keep an eye on local forecasts.

Rainy-day activities for families

Central Vietnam has plenty to do when the weather turns. Good rainy-day options with kids include:

• Indoor play centres and soft-play, Da Nang has several aimed at young children.
• Shopping malls with air conditioning, cafés, and often a kids' area, an easy half-day.
• Museums and indoor attractions for a change of pace.
• Resort facilities, many family resorts have indoor pools, kids' clubs and covered areas, one more reason a good base pays off in the wet season.
• Cooking classes and craft sessions, Hoi An in particular is known for hands-on activities that work rain or shine.

And when the sun breaks through, the beaches and Ancient Town are quieter and more atmospheric than in peak season.

What to pack for the rainy season

• Lightweight rain jackets or ponchos for everyone, cheap ponchos are also easy to buy locally.
• A rain cover for the stroller, or plan to use a carrier on wetter days.
• Quick-dry clothing and spare changes, kids will get wet feet.
• Waterproof footwear or sandals that cope with puddles.
• A few indoor toys or activities for the grey afternoons.
• It's still warm, so swimwear and sun protection still earn their place for the clear spells.

Should you visit in the rainy season?

For many families, yes. If you're flexible and mainly want a relaxed, good-value trip with quieter attractions and the occasional beach day, the rainy season is genuinely rewarding.
