Flying with Formula & Breast Milk
A practical guide to travelling with baby formula and breast milk on the way to Da Nang and Hoi An: what security allows, how much to bring, and how to keep it safe.
You can fly with formula and breast milk for your baby. Most airports, including on the way to Vietnam, exempt baby milk and food from the usual 100 ml liquid limit when you're travelling with an infant. Declare it at security, bring enough for the journey plus delays, and top up on formula locally once you arrive.
Airport security rules
When travelling with a baby, you're generally allowed to carry reasonable quantities of formula, expressed breast milk, and baby food in your hand luggage, above the standard 100 ml liquid limit. You'll usually need to declare it at security and may be asked to open or taste it, or have it screened separately. Rules vary slightly by airport and airline, so check your departure airport's guidance before you fly, and allow a little extra time at security.
How much to bring
Pack enough milk and formula for the whole journey, then add a generous buffer for delays and the first day or two after you land. Long-haul flights to Vietnam plus transfers can run much longer than planned, so it's better to have too much than too little. Pre-measured formula in individual portions makes preparation on the plane far easier.
Keeping milk cool
Expressed breast milk needs to stay cold. Carry it in an insulated cooler bag with ice packs (frozen ice packs are usually allowed through security when travelling with a baby, but confirm with your airport). Cabin crew can often help store it or provide ice. Use or discard milk within safe time limits, and when in doubt, err on the side of caution.
Preparing bottles in flight and on arrival
Ask cabin crew for hot and cooled boiled water to make up formula, they're used to the request. On the ground in Vietnam, tap water isn't for drinking, so use bottled or freshly boiled water for formula. Many family resorts provide an in-room kettle; if yours doesn't, ask, or pack a small travel kettle.
Buying formula in Da Nang and Hoi An
You don't have to carry weeks of formula. Supermarkets and pharmacies in Da Nang and Hoi An stock major international formula brands, though your exact brand and stage may not always be in stock. Bring enough for the first few days plus a backup, then top up locally. If your baby is on a specific formula, pack a little extra in case it's harder to find.
